Women save the children from the Methodist Mission on Croker Island

It was not until 3rd April 1942, after Darwin had been bombed a number of times that the missionaries and ninety-six children left the Methodist Mission on Croker Island for the mainland. The children, accompanied by white female missionaries who had disregarded the evacuation order for white women and risked their lives to remain on the island with the children, crossed from Croker Island to the mainland and made their way through the bush to a mission station. It was a long and arduous journey, which took them several months. Finally they arrived in Alice Springs and from there, they travelled to the southern states. However, the boys living at Garden Point on Melville Island remained there throughout the war.
